Nigeria Expanded Trade and Transport Program (NEXTT) /
Improving trade in Nigeria
Nigeria Expanded Trade and Transport (NEXTT) was a USAID-funded project designed to improve domestic and international trade in Nigeria. It had three main objectives:
- Growing awareness of the WTO’s Trade Facilitation Agreement
- Removing obstacles to the free flow of goods in Nigeria, especially agricultural equipment, and promoting investment in agricultural production and processing
- Building capacity in Nigerian government to boost private sector trade
- Reforming trade and investment policy
Building a high-performing trade infrastructure
We assessed the main trade corridors in Nigeria to help streamline trade and customs processes across institutions including the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Customs Service. This involved cost analysis of exports and imports, carrying out WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement awareness workshops for the Nigeria Customs Service, freight forwarders and traders to bolster awareness and improve the clearance process.
NEXTT raised awareness of the potential of the World Trade Organisation’s (WTO) Trade Facilitation Agreement (TFA) in Nigeria. Private and public-sector stakeholders were successfully brought together in workshops to identify where Nigeria’s most pressing needs were, so that resources could be allocated accordingly.
